a 3-week “continuing” training with NANCY STARK SMITH
January 4-19, 2007
Northampton, Mass. (and environs)

A deepening investigation of Contact Improvisation, Changing States, Improvisational Scores/The Underscore, Composition, and Performance. Open to those who have taken previous workshops with Nancy (with room for an exceptional exception or two.)

The workshop meets Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with occasional evening and weekend activities. Room and board are provided at Earthdance, a beautiful dance retreat center in the hills of western Mass.

Having a continuing group will allow us to jump into the work midstream—already articulate in our contact improvisation, familiar with the Underscore, "come as you are," and other aspects of my work (or at least some of them)—and be able to deepen and focus our practice in surprising and satisfying ways.

This year’s workshop will explore questions such as:
• How can we more consistently achieve the “states of grace” that integrate the kinesthetic, spiritual, intellectual, and aesthetic dimensions of our     dance practice? What does this dancing communicate to an outside audience?
• What are the preparations/structures that best support this dancing/improvising state?
• How can we integrate CI into a broader field of improvised dancing/dancemaking without losing its particular integrity and depth?

Tuition: $675-$750 (sliding scale) if received by Nov. 22, 2006; $700-$750 after 11/22/06
Room and Board: $495 (plus 3-5 hours housework/ week)
