The January 2011 CONTINUING training
is a residential workshop specifically designed to develop our practice of Contact Improvisation along with other related improvised dance work. The workshop will include physical training, improvisation and composition scores, listening practice, jamming, watching, discussion, feedback, labs, contemplative practice, and performance studies.

A rare opportunity for dancers who have participated in previous intensive workshops with Nancy to dive deeper into the study and practice of the "states of grace" materials, including: contact improvisation, solo and group improvisation, composition, contemplation, changing states, the Underscore, and performance.

In this "continuing" workshop, we'll be focusing more on performance: paying special attention to the delicate transition from intimate, private authenticity to artmaking intended to be observed by the public.

Please come prepared physically and psychologically for intensive practice (and a bit of fun!).

Schedule:
Monday–Friday, 10 am to 5:30 pm
There will be some early morning, evening, and weekend activities.
(Workshop involvement is full-time–with the exception of some weekend time–so please don't expect to schedule other things during the workshop.)

Where:
At Earthdance, a beautiful dance retreat center located in Plainfield, Massachusetts, 35 minutes west of Northampton, MA, in the Berkshire Mountains, with two dance barns and a wood-fired sauna. We will also practice at a studio in Northampton and at a wonderful Aikido dojo.

Who is eligible?
The January 2011 CONTINUING workshop welcomes dancers who have studied intensively with Nancy before and have intermediate-level experience in Contact Improvisation. Intermediate CI level: fluency with falling, rolling, weight taking and giving, being upside down, following a point of contact, working with subtlety (and exertion), and improvising in physical contact. Other background in dance and improvisation a big plus.

Language: The workshop will be conducted in English. Moderate fluency in the English language required.

To Register:
Fill out the online application form (see below) outlining your background and skill level in Contact Improvisation, dance, and improvisation; where and when you've worked with Nancy; and your reasons for wanting to attend. Submit this form with your $160 deposit online or via post. All applications must be approved by Nancy.

COSTS & INFORMATION

WORKSHOP TUITION:
$750–830 (sliding scale)* if application form & $160 deposit are received by October 15, 2010.
$780–860 (sliding scale) if deposit & application are received after October 15, 2010.

Tuition includes processing fee. Small discount available if paying by U.S. check or by "E-check." Contact Patrick, workshop coordinator, for details.

* "Sliding scale" is a way for people to pay according to their ability.
General Guidelines:
$750      student rate: economically challenged students or unemployed
$790      regular rate: employed but economically challenged
$830      economically comfortable and you feel you can afford it (support the arts!)

HOUSING/FOOD:
$705 plus 3–5 hours/week of housework for 3 weeks shared room & food at Earthdance.

Earthdance Housing/Food fee is a separate payment from Tuition payment.

ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE:
Arrive: Sunday, Jan. 2, 4 pm (Earliest arrival is 2 pm. Early arrivals must help clean-up from New Year's Jam.)
Depart: Friday, Jan. 21, late afternoon
(Check with Earthdance if you wish to arrive early or depart later.)

TRANSPORTATION:

• Closest Airport: Bradley Airport (BDL) in Hartford, Connecticut
• Rides to Earthdance: from Bradley airport and Northampton are coordinated with Earthdance staff for a fee. Contact contact@earthdance.net as soon as possible. (You must arrive by 4 pm, Sunday, Jan. 2, to BDL or Northampton to get a ride from Earthdance staff.)
• During workshop: Travel to and from the in-town sites will be arranged through carpooling using participants' cars (sharing expenses).

Please bring your car, if at all possible!
